Our Process

Whether it’s an addition, renovation, or new build, the project always starts with design. From design to construction, a project is a process. Donaldson Drafting and Design keeps the process as simple as the project will allow.

Clients are welcome to reach out at anytime, without any obligation to hire the practice for their project. Donaldson Drafting & Design is happy to answer questions, whether specific or general, in relation to design process. The initial conversation will cover the scope of the project, discussion of the firm’s services, and an overview of fees. The firm prides itself on being open and honest. Therefore, during this meeting, the designer will clarify what responsibilities they retain (ex. research for property zoning) and what duties are outside of the scope of work (ex. warning if engineering is required).  Once these have been established, a site visit will be scheduled. In the case of new builds, a site visit may not be necessary, unless the client specifically requests an in-person meeting. The initial visit and site meeting are also without obligation of hiring.

The site visit begins with a more in-depth discussion of the project. If clients have any reference materials, this would be an ideal time to share. Reference materials may include floor plans, pictures to represent the desired aesthetic style, and any other design features for inclusion. The designer will be inspired to piece the various reference materials into a cohesive design. If you don’t have any reference materials, don’t fret. The designer is only too happy to draft from scratch when necessary. Most projects will have a budget. While the firm does not actively participate in quoting the construction of a project, the firm does have ample experience in this field, and will consider cost when making design decisions. Therefore, we suggest organizing wants and needs into priorities. This allows the designer the knowledge of where it would be best to make compromises to respect the budget. Most projects will require a land survey as well, to be provided by the client(s). If the client and the designer are in agreement and chose to move forward with working on the project together, Donaldson Drafting & Design will request an acknowledgement of fees form to be signed. This form lists out the applicable fees, and is filled out to be project specific.

Once the designer has enough information to move forward, they will draft the initial design. This typically includes a floor plan, labelled but without dimensions, and a 3D image. The image is intended to help those who are more visual to interpret the design. However, it will never fully, accurately represent the built project. The clients then critique the plan and elevation, and make a list of changes they would like made. The designer makes corrections, and sends over a revised design. This step repeats as many times as necessary until the client is happy with the design.

Once the design is finalized, the designer moves onto construction drawings. This is arguably the easiest step in the process. Occasionally, questions will arise during this part. The designer will reach out to the clients for answers, if necessary. The designer will provide a digital copy of the plans and required paperwork for the permit application process. Donaldson Drafting & Design is not responsible for applying for a permit. One might think that the project is complete once the digital files have been sent. Perhaps with other firms this would be the case, however, Donaldson Drafting & Design prides itself and remaining available to answer questions or make changes until your project is completely constructed. We are committed to building responsive relationships with our clients.

Donaldson Drafting & Design is dedicated to creating designs with functionality and longevity, while being consciously economic. We believe that designs need to meet the client’s individual needs today, and anticipate their needs in the future.
